“As an adult member of Guides Australia you can strengthen your skills, enhance the skills of girls and young women and benefit the community.”
Women aged from 18 years old join for a variety of reasons. Maybe their daughters have asked them to join or they have responded to an appeal for leaders in their local District. They may have fond childhood memories of making their Brownie Promise, sitting around a camp fire sharing stories as a Girl Guide or travelling to an overseas aid project as a Ranger or they had friends who were Girl Guides or they may have just thought “why not give it a go?”
It doesn’t matter why!
Adult members have great opportunities to volunteer in a variety of roles and help girls and young women strengthen their friendships, gain skills and grow within themselves. By joining Guides as an adult member, you can become a role model.
As an adult member you can choose the role to suit the time you have available and your interests. No prior Guiding experience is necessary. It helps to have a love of life, willingness to try new experiences and an enthusiasm to inspire others.
Leaders of Youth facilitate the Australian Guide Program with a Unit of girls and can choose the age range of girls that they prefer to Guide. The age range within a local Unit will usually span 3-4 years. The Unit size will vary with the age of the girls and the number of Leaders. A minimum of 2 adults are required at any meeting for a safe environment. This is a very important and personally rewarding role.
Leaders of Adults coordinate and support a team of Leaders of Youth or other Adult Leaders and provide training, mentoring and administration. A Leader of Adults needs to be a good listener and communicator, helpful and understanding, flexible and a team player. It is not necessary to have been a Leader of Youth.
Resource Leaders have a particular skill they can share with a number of Units e.g. abseiling, canoeing, sports, camping, the arts, crafts or catering.
Adult Member – Any woman can become a member who is prepared to make the Guide Promise and be involved in as little or as much as her time allows.
If you are not interested in a leadership role but would like to be involved on a committee or as a one off to help Guiding, you may have accounting skills, PR and communications skills, webskills, catering or mentoring skills, to name a few. Guides will be interested in your skills. Now is the time to volunteer and take up the challenge of one of the exciting Leadership opportunities available in a community near you. Let Guides grow and strengthen your skills.
