FAQ

When do Girl Guides meet?

Girl Guides meet during school terms, once a week, in a dedicated hall or community space for 1-2 hours. Guides also meet for excursion camps, Guiding events and community appearances.

Guides are structured into Units according to youth ages. Within each Unit are Patrols of up to 6 Guides.

What do Girl Guides do?

Guides plan their own activities with support from Volunteer women called Adult Leaders. Activities vary from week to week and from Unit to Unit.

Guides are encouraged to ‘be their best’ when helping run special events together, ‘be prepared’ when working on Challenge badges and applaud each other with a loud ‘bravo’ when the special Award is achieved.

Girl Guides love adventures and the outdoors. Guide Leaders promote physical challenges, resilience, teamwork and self-confidence. Guides learn that girls can do anything, their only limit is their imagination.

Why Girls only?

Girl Guides provides a unique girl only space. International research has shown that boys and girls learn very differently, Girl Guides are encouraged by Leaders and peers to explore their personal boundaries, in a safe and secure atmosphere.

  • To cover meeting and District expenses, there is a term fee which is set by the District.
  • Handbook: Girls and Leaders may need to purchase a handbook. Separated into age groups, derived from developmental stages (plus one generic handbook for Leaders), the handbooks are designed to ensure success at every stage of the Guiding journey. Jam-packed with fun ideas and new badge challenges, these books are a wealth of information for Leaders and trace a Guide’s journey.
  • Events: Camps and outings are available at an extra fee. Leaders usually advise of these events early to allow you to budget for them.
  • Support Group: The Support Group may charge a levy to assist with maintenance costs and may reduce the amount of fundraising required.
  • Leaders: Membership and uniform costs may be paid for in part by the District. Contact us for more details.
  • Fundraising: Guides may also do fundraising activities at times to help with the above costs.

The Guide Uniform

A uniform is worn by all members. This create a sense of unity and to identify them as Australian Guides.
Many Districts maintain a second hand uniform pool.

What if I cannot find a Unit in my area or a Unit that suits my schedule?

If the option listed above does not suit for any reason (time, distance etc.), there may be other Districts in your area (the above contact can give you the Region contact details) or there is always the option of Lones Guides.

Lones Guides communicate with their Unit electronically or via mail and have an excellent long-distance relationship with each other!  Lones have the opportunity to attend camps and adventures with an active Unit so each member still gets the full Guiding experience.
